Geelong in need of speed

- JAY CLARK

GEELONG has been urged to chase Brisbane speedster Pearce Hanley to add some speed to its premiership tilt next season.

And Richmond star Brett Deledio has admitted it would be “hard to see” the Tigers putting him up for trade in next month’s exchange period.

The Cats are again poised to make some aggressive list changes and want to add some run to support Brownlow Medallist Patrick Dangerfield and captain Joel Selwood.

Hanley, 27, is contracted for next season at Brisbane and has been linked to a move to Gold Coast in return for one of the Suns’ many high picks.

But Geelong great Bill Brownless said Hanley was the perfect target for the Cats.

“They really need some run, they’re very sluggish,” Brownless told Channel 9.

“They need a running defender, they need a crumber and they need another forward to help Tom Hawkins.”

Geelong is also interested in North Melbourne free agent Daniel Wells, 31, although Collingwood has reportedly offered the Kangas’ line breaker a lucrative three-year deal.

Deledio, 29, said a trade was hard to envisage but didn’t rule out the possibility of switching clubs.

“It is a business at the moment and you’ve got to take in all things, such as your family,” Deledio said.

“But Richmond has been fantastic to me and they have always looked to look after me, so it would be hard to see that changing.

“At the moment we have got a fair bit else going on our plate.”

Meanwhile, Geelong hasn’t wasted time planning for 2017, axing fives rookies yesterday.

Zac Bates, Padraig Lucey, Cameron Delaney, Tom Read and Jock Cornell were told they would not be offered new deals after Geelong’s season came to an end at the hands of Sydney on Friday night.
