Fasolo hard at work to beat the yips

- GLENN MCFARLANE

COLLINGWOOD has encouraged wayward forward Alex Fasolo’s increased number of shots at goal on the training track this week in a bid to overcome his goalkicking yips.

Fasolo has been one of the main culprits of the Magpies’ inefficiency in attack this season, kicking 4.11 from set-shots, and it is an area that the club has focused on heading into tomorrow’s must-win clash with Geelong at the MCG.

Coach Nathan Buckley confirmed yesterday Fasolo has followed a path set by Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt last week, by increasing the number of shots to help chase a different game-day result.

“If you don’t get results, clearly you look at tinkering,” Buckley said.

“We don’t sit on our hands here, and ‘Fas’ is as frustrated as anyone because he prides himself on his finishing.

“He is a big boy, he is more than capable of dealing with it, and he is putting the work in. He will be rewarded, and I hope it is sooner rather than later.”

Riewoldt had between 400 and 500 shots at goal in the week leading up to his six-goal haul against Melbourne last week. Buckley would not put a figure on how many shots Fasolo had at training, but said the forward had chosen a more practical approach.

“Anyone can work on their goalkicking, even by sitting on the couch, funnily enough,” he said. “But the reality is my belief is to get out and you do it, and you do it and you do it again until you have confidence in your routine.

“Fas’ bent is towards getting out and doing it, and that is what he has been doing, mainly. It is not just Fas. We have plenty of points we have left out on the field because of our conversion, and that’s the responsibility of every bloke who gets the chance.”
