Tigers take aim at Joeys

- ALEX OATES GFL

OUTGOING Grovedale coach Craig McCaughan has warned his side is capable of causing a major boilover when it meets raging premiership favourite St Joseph’s.

McCaughan, who announced to the playing group on Tuesday night he would stand down at season’s end, believes the Tigers can inflict Joeys’ first defeat of 2017 at Drew Reserve.

“The belief is certainly there,” he said, after his side snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 61-point win over North Shore last round.

“We’re coming up against the best team in the comp and probably the best team of the last few years, but we believe and we know our best footy over four quarters can get the job done.

“It’s a matter of having that consistency. We’re not going to be superstars for four quarters, but if we can hold the opposition for a quarter knowing that we can get a roll on in the next quarter, then I’ve got no doubt that we can cause an upset.

“There’s a few areas we need to improve on, and we’ve been working on those and trying to rectify it at training and in games, and we hope we can put a few things together and jump them early and get a result.”

The Tigers improved their record to 3-7 with the win over the Seagulls, but they remain three games out of the top five with eight matches to play.

“Mathematically we can make it, yes, but it’s a week to week thing now,” McCaughan said. “We’ve got to beat Joeys this week and we’ve got seven games after the bye, so we need to win as many as we can.” Lachlan Wright will miss with concussion.
