Heads-up on job prospects

- NICHOLAS PAYNE

MORE than 600 employment opportunities will be on offer at the Geelong Jobs Fair today.

The massive jobs expo is the first of four fairs being held across Victoria over the coming months, following the success of similar Government-hosted jobs fairs in Broadmeadows and Gippsland.

Jobseekers will have a chance to meet face-to-face with exhibitors from some of Victoria’s major employers, including agencies such as the Level Crossing Removal Authority, Victoria Police, WorkSafe Victoria, TAC and Ambulance Victoria.

State Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan will officially open the event which runs from 10am to 4pm at the Geelong Arena.

Visitors will receive information and job training packs, and will be able to attend information sessions on resume writing and developing job search strategies.

Mr Noonan said the fair was part of an effort to support jobseekers in the Geelong region, including workers affected by the closure of local car manufacturing industries.

“The Geelong Jobs Fair is a terrific way to connect local jobseekers with employers,” Mr Noonan said.

“Despite the closure of local car manufacturing, nearly 20,000 new jobs have been created across Geelong since we came to government.”

Mr Noonan’s commonwealth counterpart, federal Employment Minister Michaelia Cash, said the fair would be an important opportunity for those looking for information and help getting into the job market.

“Members of the local community will have the opportunity to talk directly with employers to find out about job options,” Senator Cash said.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson acknowledged the “resilience and resourcefulness” of Geelong workers, and encouraged people to attend the fair to network and explore job prospects.

“Despite some challenges in our employment market, we are continuing to punch above our weight,” Ms Henderson said.

“There will be lots of information on a range of jobs and industries, as well as tips on where the growth industries are and specific advice for retrenched manufacturing workers on the help available to get them into new jobs.”

The Geelong Jobs Fair is a partnership between the Victorian and Commonwealth governments.
