Harry’s ‘meat and greet’ session with Jenkins

- ANDREW CAPEL ADELAIDE

DUAL Geelong premiership defender Harry Taylor has pulled off a bizarre on-field stunt, shaking Adelaide rival Josh Jenkins’s hand with a slice of ham in it after Friday’s top-of-the-table clash at Adelaide Oval.

Adelaide captain Taylor Walker revealed the strange incident on Triple M radio and it was later confirmed to the Adelaide Advertiser by ace Crows key forward Jenkins.

“I wasn’t there when it actually happened, but ‘JJ’ filled me in and said that when he shook Harry Taylor’s hand there was a slice of ham in there,’’ Walker said.

“I don’t have the answer as to why but . . . it’s different.’’

Jenkins, who described the incident as “weird’’, suffered food poisoning in the lead-up to the first-versus-second match against the Cats, which the Crows won by 21 points to firm as premiership favourite.

He went down with food poisoning last week after eating a bad ham, but he was still baffled about the motive behind the prank.

He fell ill after eating ham following the funeral of Crows national recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie’s wife.

He was bedridden for almost two days and reportedly lost 7kg before playing against Geelong, where he was quiet with 13 disposals and one goal.

Regular defender Taylor kicked five goals as a forward against the Crows and after the game shook Jenkins’s hand with a slice of ham tucked into the palm of his right hand.

Walker, meanwhile, said Jenkins had eaten enough ham “for about six Christmases’’ while he was in Melbourne.

The Cats did not comment yesterday when asked to clarify or elaborate on the story.

The Geelong Advertiser has asked where the ham came from and whether it was preplanned.
