Mackey St stage two given the go-ahead
AFTER the successful revitalisiton of Geelong’s Mackey St precinct, the area could now be open to more business and commercial tenants.
The City of Greater Geelong adopted an amended land use plan for the address at Tuesday’s council meeting.
The amendment, reffered to as stage two in the precinct development, will help in the establishment of more office spaces for businesses wanting to set up in the developing area.
CoGG administrator Peter Dorling said the proposal from the land owner was a good opportunity for growth.
“The proposal represents an opportunity to facilitate the adaptive re-use of a significant heritage place and support the growth of new business and employment,” Mr Dorling said.
“The master plan will help to ensure a fair and orderly planning outcome for the Mackey St site without prejudicing the operation of the Port of Geelong.”
The precinct has recently been home to a Deakin University-led initiative called #VacantGeelong, which set up artistic studios in former factories at the site.
Artists have been overseeing creative ventures with past Ford workers and other locals, creating a temporary space for art exhibitions, community events, talks and forums.
The project has been backed by a $35,000 grant from the State Government.
In agreeing to the amendment, CoGG said it would ensure the heritage significance of the site was protected.
