STATE LEAGUE PROMOTION AT STAKE

CORIO SC will be playing for a whole lot more than just local pride when it embarks on a short road trip to neighbouri­ng Bell Post Hill to tackle Geelong Rangers tomorrow.

The Bell Park outfit will be literally playing for its season.

This weekend’s Round 17 fixture at Myers Reserve is between two long-time rivals, but also two teams playing for entirely different motives.

The hosts will be staging a special past players’, life members’ and sponsors’ day, which will see major sponsor Vanders Real Estate provide a green “Vanders” kit for the senior team to wear against its State League 2 rivals on the day.

The biggest crowd of the season is expected to turn out for this massive clash and the club will put on four hours of free beer, wine, soft drink and finger food for all sponsors and life members from 1-5pm.

“We’re still reeling from last weekend’s game and we cannot wait for Saturday to undo the wrong results, which the boys felt hard done by,” Rangers coach Stuart Begg said of his team’s demoralisi­ng 1-4 away loss at the hands of Altona City last week.

“The boys are really looking forward to the challenge of taking on Corio.

“We know they are higher up than us and we want to get the wood on them, but more importantl­y the boys want to capture the three points in front of our fans.”

Nonetheles­s, the stakes are significan­tly higher for Corio.

A win against the Rangers will edge the fourth-placed visitors closer to a top two spot and subsequent promotion to next year’s State 1 competitio­n.

Corio is just seven points off joint leaders Altona City and Hoppers Crossing.

Helping Corio’s cause, the leaders meet at Hoppers Crossing tomorrow.
