Something extra in Kmart’s baskets

- HARRISON TIPPET

“All Allan was concerned about after the explosion was his kids,” she said.

Betty said the Holden Allan was working on had failed a roadworthy test on Tuesday.

“He took his car to have a roadworthy and it was knocked back because the gas tank was 10 years old. It either had to be fixed or taken out.”

Allan was left with burns to his face, neck, chest, arms and legs after the gas tank caught fire. Paramedics took Allan from his home on Thursday night to a nearby oval, where he was flown to the The Alfred.

Betty said Allan was put into an induced coma on Thursday night and was expected to have surgery to improve the blood flow in his arms yesterday.

A second man injured in the same incident was taken to Geelong hospital suffering burns to his back.

He was discharged yesterday morning. A WAURN Ponds department store appears to have become a basket case for theft.

While self-serve checkout scams are resulting in major supermarkets searching for strategies to cut down on theft and crime, a Waurn Ponds Kmart is trying to cut down on its cheap plastic shopping baskets leaving the store.

Baskets at the Waurn Ponds shopping centre Kmart have been fitted with security tags in an apparent attempt to stop them being stolen.

Kmart Australia didn’t say whether basket theft was a problem plaguing the store when asked by the Geelong Advertiser, instead saying the security tags were simply a preventive measure.

“Many stores will tag equipment as part of normal process to prevent it being removed from the store,” Kmart spokeswoman Natalie Rixon said.

It’s not the first time Kmart has taken unusual action to thwart stickyfingered shoppers, after a Melbourne store was forced to lock away its chocolate blocks in DVD-style security cases last year. The sweettoothed thieves, who were only after Cadbury blocks, were snacking on the chocolate as they did their shopping, a security guard said at the time.
