Amos offers support for Swans

- LACHIE YOUNG

SOUTH Barwon premiership coach and current Carlton assistant Dale Amos says he would gladly lend a hand to help his former club find a replacement for co-coach Clinton Wells.

Wells has said this will be his last season, citing the need to give back to his wife and family after a decorated career with the Swans both on and off the field.

While his work commitments with the Blues mean he cannot contribute to South Barwon as much as he would like, Amos said he was willing to do whatever he could to pro- vide support in landing the club a new coach.

“I try to help out where I can, and obviously time restrictions make it difficult to be heavily involved, but I have got boys that are involved in the junior part of the footy club there,” Amos said.

“Those sorts of opportunit- ies, whether it be in a really minor role or a slightly more significant role, I’m indebted to South Barwon.

“They gave me the initial opportunity to start my coaching career, which has led me to be able to do it in a full-time capacity, so wherever I can try to pay them back I try to do as much as I can and give back to the club where possible.”

Wells’ co-coach, James Maas, has put his hand up for the role. It is believed South Barwon will canvass options to find a solo coach or someone to work alongside Maas.

Amos said given the nature of the role he would expect a quality list of candidates.

“I think they (South Bar- won) are in a position where, looking from the outside in, they have obviously got a young team so they need someone who is going to be able to provide great direction from a coaching point of view,” he said.

“From an external point of view you would think it is a pretty enticing opportunity for someone to step into a club with a really strong base and a recent history of success, as well as a strong junior presence in the senior team.

“You would think it would be pretty attractive for somebody to take on.”

South Barwon is ninth on the ladder with five matches remaining in the 2017 season.
