Libs push yes vote

COALITION MPs who support same-sex marriage will today launch their campaign for Australians to vote “Yes” in next month’s postal survey.
Federal Government ministers from Victoria, including Josh Frydenberg, Kelly O’Dwyer and Darren Chester, are among those in favour of legalising same-sex marriage.
The “Libs & Nats For Yes” campaign argues there is a “strong case” for same-sex marriage within the Liberal Party’s liberal and conservative traditions.
Quotes from Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson, who supports the Yes vote, also feature as part of the campaign, although she is not directly involved in the new group.
“If two people love each other and wish to commit to a life together, they should have the option to be recognised equally under the law,” Ms Henderson’s statement reads.
Like Ms Henderson, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is in favour of legalising samesex marriage and is encouraging people to vote “Yes”, but he is not expected to actively campaign on the issue.
“My position on same-sex marriage is well known. I will be voting yes,” Ms Henderson said.
“However, our government respects the fact that, for many Australians, this is a deeply personal issue.
“The postal survey is a very important opportunity for every Australian to have his or her say.”
Responding to their conservative colleagues pushing for a “No” vote, the Liberals and National MPs behind the campaign argue successful institutions evolve over time.
“Marriage is no exception to this rule. The Marriage Act has been amended 20 times since 1961,” the campaign organisers said.
