Delays expected at ‘G

- PETER ROLFE

FOOTY fans have been warned to expect delays entering the MCG tomorrow night with a crowd of more than 95,000 expected for a finals blockbuster between Richmond and Geelong.

Strict security checks in light of terror fears, wet weather and traffic disruptions will slow supporters queuing for the highly anticipated match — the only game in Melbourne for week one of the finals.

MCC spokesman Shane Brown said the “massive crowd’’ should expect delays.

“With such a large crowd and comprehensive security measures in place, we strongly suggest that fans arrive as early as possible,’’ he said.

“Those who arrive close to game time risk missing the teams run out on to the ground, as well as the first bounce.’’

Everyone will be searched on entry, so fans have been urged to limit the amount of bags they bring.

“The extensive security procedures that have occurred throughout the AFL season, including bag checks and wanding of all patrons, will remain in place on Friday night,’’ he said.

“These checks will be stringent and fans need to allow extra time and arrive early to ensure they don’t miss any of the action.’’

With the match a general admission sellout, Mr Brown confirmed no tickets would be sold outside the ground.

Showers, possible hail and a top temperature of 12C has been forecast as the Tigers and Cats play off for safe passage to a preliminary final.

Fans have also been encouraged to take public transport to the MCG with road works in the area and limited car parking in Yarra Park.

US band The Killers were yesterday announced as the headline act of this year’s pre and post-Grand Final celebrations. The band will perform before the opening bounce and return to the stage after the match for a premiership party from 6pm, free to fans without a grand final ticket.

A footy festival in Yarra Park outside the MCG will run from the Wednesday of Grand Final week until the premiership decider.

X Factor winner Dami Im will perform the Australian anthem at the Grand Final.

Public and AFL Reserve gates will open at 5.30pm for tomorrow night’s second qualifying final with the MCC Reserve open from 5pm.
