Equality on the march

Big turnout tipped for ‘yes’ event

- HARRISON TIPPET

HUNDREDS of people are set to march through the streets of Geelong on Saturday in support of same-sex marriage.

The Geelong Equality Walk is set to “spread the rainbow around central Geelong” on Saturday afternoon to encourage people to vote yes in the planned national same sex marriage plebiscite.

More than 200 people have signalled their intent to attend the march in Say Yes Geelong’s online event page.

The march has been supported by Geelong businesses and organisations, including Geelong Rainbow Inc, Geelong Trades Hall and the Piano Bar.

Piano Bar co-owner Andy Pobjoy said he would be attending the march and supporting the ‘yes’ vote to support the bar’s diverse patrons.

“Obviously being an entertainment venue and, having strong connections with the entertainment community and the theatre community, there’s an awful lot of gay people in our line of work,” Andy said.

“So, we’ve really found that with Piano Bar it’s an allinclusive venue whether you’re old, young, gay, straight — whatever music you like.

“Also Aaron (Skinner), who is a part-owner in the business, grew up in Geelong as a young gay person and really had a very tough time — he was physically injured and assault- ed because of his sexuality.”

The Geelong Equality Walk will begin at 1pm on the corner of Little Malop and Moorabool streets.
