Hats in ring for election

Two more Geelong candidates

- HARRISON TIPPET

A FORMER mayoral candidate and a born and raised Geelong accountant are the latest to announce they will seek Geelong council election.

Stephanie Asher and Stewart Webb will be contestants in the Bellarine ward in the October election .

It won’t be the first tilt at election for Ms Asher, a Geelong Advertiser columnist, after finishing second to Darryn Lyons in the 2013 mayoral race and previously standing for both federal and state election.

Ms Asher said she wanted to ensure the Bellarine Peninsula was included in decision making.

“Whether it’s investment, tourism, recreation or employment, we all want our home town to thrive,” Ms Asher said in a statement.

“Currently the reputation of Geelong reflects an acceptance of mediocrity and inequity, yet our region is world-class.

“The Bellarine Peninsula is unique and needs greater consideration. I will speak up for the Bellarine Peninsula and show how a commonsense strategy with transparent processes makes people accountable.”

Ocean Grove resident Mr Webb said yesterday he loved where he lived.

“Now that the City of Greater Geelong is reverting back to local government, l want to be a part of a smart and innovative council.

“The administrators have laid a solid foundation, but this has to be built on.”

So far, the Geelong Advertiser is aware of 29 candidates running for election in one of Geelong’s four wards on October 27.
