Dangerfield vows quick fix
SUPERSTAR Patrick Dangerfield is confident the flaws exposed in Geelong’s loss to Richmond won’t be terminal as the Cats stare a straight-sets exit in the eyes.
The Cats were comprehensively pushed aside by the Tigers at the MCG last night, going down by 51 points.
They now face a do-or-die final against the winner of today’s match between Sydney and Essendon. Both sides have beaten the Cats this year.
Geelong’s dejected playing group walked straight off the ground and into a meeting.
Dangerfield said the group promised each other to move on as quickly as possible from the loss.
“It’s (a feeling of) disappointment. We set out to win the game and we weren’t able to do that,” Dangerfield said.
“The predicament for us doesn’t really change. We need to win three games.
“So, as disappointed as we are individually and collectively, we need to move forward pretty quickly.
“We can’t be thinking about it tomorrow. Yes we will be reviewing the game, there are things we will look to improve, (and) our opposition will be different (next week).”
The Cats struggled to steal momentum away from the Tigers for large periods of last night’s loss.
Their forward line was as impotent and at times cumbersome, managing just 15 scoring shots. Geelong went through the first 57 minutes of the match without kicking a goal, forced on the backfoot by the Tigers’ pressure.
The Cats were also well beaten around the ball, despite Zac Smith dominating his match up with Toby Nankervis.
Dangerfield, who racked up 31 touches of his own, struggled with his efficiency despite winning plenty of the ball.
“I thought we weren’t great around the ball. Our precision inside wasn’t at the level it should be, (while) Richmond’s was,” Dangerfield said. “And we weren’t able to get it (goals) on the scoreboard, you obviously need to kick a winning score. It’s nothing that can’t be fixed.
“So as disappointed as we are, we need to get over that pretty quickly because this is not the time of the year to feel sorry for yourself.
“We’ve earned the right of a double chance so for us it’s about getting back to work and putting in a performance that we are capable of.”
