WIN AFL GF TIX

-

I COULD feel the rumble in my pants as I interviewed Joel Selwood.

And before you sickos start getting the wrong idea, those vibrations were coming from the phone in my pocket.

A media scrum is no place for the faint-hearted, especially in Geelong’s rooms after a big win.

There would have been a good half-dozen of us huddled around the Cats captain, hanging on every word that came out of his mouth.

My arm was shaking from holding my dictaphone in the one spot for six minutes.

Then came the moment. Roaming Brian joined in the interview.

For those who don’t watch the footy, media personality Brian Taylor goes around the winning rooms post-match and generally makes a menace of himself.

Some people love it, others hate it.

Those who know me well know I loathe it.

So it didn’t surprise me when my phone started going off. Turns out I was right in the middle of the shot, giving Taylor death stares. And didn’t everyone let me know about it. Once I managed to check my phone I had at least 20 Twitter notifications, 10 messages and God knows how many Facebook mentions. Every single one had captured my glare perfectly. My mates never miss that opportunity, especially because most of them know how much I hate the spotlight. I’m of the opinion journalists should be heard, but not seen. Cameras cutting to journalists asking the questions in a press conference is pointless. But there are certainly a fair share of scribes who love that extra bit of attention.

They use it as a chance to build their “brand”, going on television and radio.

But the good journos are the ones back at their desk, plugging in the calls, doing all the groundwork.

Working in the AFL media gives you a decent idea of some of the big egos that get around. I’m happy not to be a part of that. Anyway, back on topic. I’m off to Adelaide to cover the preliminary final on Friday night. Surely my mate BT will be there.

I’ve already started practising my stare in the mirror.

Hopefully I can deliver one for the ages when I can on camera!
