Ex-Swan lands at Anglesea for next season

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE EXCLUSIVE

ANGLESEA has scored a coup with former AFL midfielder Matthew O’Dwyer joining the club’s playing list.

O’Dwyer played seven games with Sydney after being rookie listed in 2007.

He has spent time at Werribee in the VFL, Eastlake in AFL Canberra and most recently Avondale Heights in the Essendon District league.

Roos coach Paul Carson said the 29-year-old, who will be one of the BFL’s premier players next season, fell into the club’s lap.

“He’s 29 and he’s just moved into Anglesea, so we got him in about a month or so ago and we think he’s going to be a very, very handy inclusion to our team,” Carson said.

“He won a senior VFL bestand-fairest at Werribee; he’s about 189cm but he’s a utility.

“He was drafted as a midfielder and I think that’s where he’ll play most of his footy, because he’s a really good athlete, really skilful, really smart and creative, but he may play forward or back at stages, too. “He’s a really good size.” Meanwhile, Hayden Foss has announced his retirement after joining the club from St Joseph’s at the end of 2016, which frees up the Roos’ points cap for O’Dwyer’s inclusion.

O’Dwyer joins the BFL as a four-point player.

Carson said the club remained active in the recruiting department, but had put a line through St Joseph’s great Daniel Lovick, who announced his GFL retirement last month, joining the Roos.

“I can confirm ‘Lovey’ won’t be at Anglesea,” he said.
