Worker, patient and now fundraiser
WHEN she is not working at the Andrew Love Cancer Centre, Sandra Doherty is raising funds for, and awareness of, the services provided there.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, Ms Doherty has experienced the care, compassion and commitment provided by staff as a patient and a team member.
She recently returned from a major Barwon Health Foundation fund-raising mission that took her and five others to India on a fourday, 200km bike ride to the Taj Mahal.
The team raised $5500 across four fundraisers before they left.
“Having been through my treatment at Andrew Love, my enhanced empathy drew me back to wanting to make a contribution and be a positive part of the journey that people with cancer face,” she said.
“Every little bit helps so much.”
Ms Doherty is now calling on members of the Geelong community to help bring the magic of the Gala Parade to life as a volunteer.
“I first volunteered for the Gala Parade three years ago. It was such a special day to see the generosity of people in our town, coming together to build better hospital services,” she said.
“I loved the priceless look on children’s faces during the Gala Parade.”
