Woman trapped in crash
A MOTORIST had to be cut from her damaged vehicle after a two-car smash at Grovedale.
It was one of three collisions across the region yesterday, with five people injured.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Reserve and Barwarre roads after reports of a two-vehicle collision near the train line, about 8.15am.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said two people were taken to Geelong hospital in stable conditions.
Belmont firefighter Gavin Fitzgerald said V/Line trains were slowed to protect the scene.
“A 4WD was towing a boat when it (appears to have) collided with a car carrying a woman in her 30s and her teenage son,” Mr Fitzgerald said.
“She was trapped via the impact of the collision. Geelong City CFA rescue crews extricated her safely.
“The challenge was it was adjacent to the V/Line crossing so we contacted V/Line to slow down those trains coming through the scene.”
Soon after a man in his 60s suffered serious injuries after falling from his motorbike in the Otways.
Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lisa Hind said paramedics were dispatched to the intersection of Barlidjaru Trail and Kaanglang Quary Track, at Barramunga near Barwon Downs, about 9.40am.
“He suffered a facial lacer- ation, a chest injury and back pain and was taken to Geelong hospital in a serious but stable condition,” Ms Hind said.
Due to the location it took paramedics about three hours to get the man to hospital.
Two elderly motorists were also taken to Geelong hospital after a two-car crash outside Corio Village on Bacchus Marsh Rd, about 2.30pm.
The force of the crash trapped one occupant and CFA and SES personnel worked to free them.
South Barwon SES spokesman Scott Clark said inattention was a major concern.
“Inattention plays a big part in these collisions, especially with extra traffic on the roads,” Mr Clark said.
Meanwhile, a Ballarat mother is fighting for life in hospital after a crash at Mt Duneed. Melanie Ranken, 25, was driving on Lower Mt Duneed Rd, Mt Duneed, when the car was struck from behind, spearing the sedan into trees about 2.10pm on Thursday.
A Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman said she remains in a critical condition.
