Free summer program

- JAIMEE WILKENS

CURIOUS coastal explorers will have the opportunity to experience a variety of free activities along the Bellarine and Surf Coast’s beaches as part of the 2018 Summer by the Sea.

Bookings for the next edition of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s popular annual summer program opened yesterday.

Each year, the department puts on a number of free activities along the state’s coastline to help educate Victorians about coastal care.

Coastcare Victoria co-ordinator Evelyn Nichols said the program attracted thousands of Victorians to the coast every year.

“Summer by the Sea is a fantastic opportunity for all Victorians to explore the coastal areas on their doorstep, and to learn about some of the challenges facing our fragile coastal environments,” she said.

“The program, now in its 22nd year, plays an important role in developing Victorians’ understanding and appreciation for the state’s 2000 kilo- metres of coastline.”

The Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast regions, in particular, will play host to some amazing free events, including canoeing at Anglesea, beachcombing at Indented Head and Clifton Springs and various rock pool rambles around local beaches.

Ms Nicholson said the Coastcare team would continue to update the booking website with new experiences over the coming weeks.
