PLUS — $20M JOBS FUND:
$20m package to create 1200 jobs and MP says ....
MORE than 1200 jobs are expected to be created in Geelong through a $20 million Federal Government package, set to be announced today.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is set to reveal Geelong and Corangamite will be the first to benefit from a $220 million Regional Jobs and Investment Packages project — designed to diversify regional economies.
The $20 million will be shared by 21 projects in the greater Geelong region, and is expected to create more than 1200 jobs.
“More than 600 new jobs will be generated through the construction phase and a further 600 ongoing jobs will be created, with just over 200 of those ongoing jobs in advanced manufacturing,” Mr Turnbull said.
“The initiative is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to stimulate jobs and drive economic growth in Australia’s regions.”
A quarter of the package — $5 million — will go to Deakin University-based carbon fibre manufacturer Lemond Composites, to design and construct Australia’s first carbon fibre manufacturing facility.
Corangamite federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson described the development of the facility as an “absolute game changer”.
“Geelong is well on its way to become an advanced manufacturing powerhouse,” Ms Henderson said. “I pay credit to Deakin University which has done so much to support advanced manufacturing at its Waurn Ponds campus in a range of industries including advanced materials.
“This is really a great day for Corangamite.”
Other major projects to win funding include more than $3 million for the development of an eco-tourism destination and retail precinct at Lake Modewarre.
There will also be $2 million for the development of the Geelong waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct, including building a new public pier, clubhouse, public facilities and event spaces.
The announcement comes 18 months after Mr Turnbull and Ms Henderson announced the $20 million funding package, 10 days before the last federal election.
