Retreat refused

- HARRISON TIPPET

QUEENSCLIFF residents have successfully chased a proposed ‘wellness retreat’ out of town.

The Bellarine Wellness Retreat, which was to primarily cater for people with depression, anxiety and stress, was rumoured to be a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre by objectors.

Applicant David Forbes wrote to the Borough of Queenscliffe this week after the owners of the property informed him they weren’t prepared to offer him a lease as they previously had been.

“Apparently, as locals, they (the property owners) have been under a lot of pressure to not allow a Drug and Alcohol Rehab at the address,” Mr Forbes said to the Borough.

“As you are aware this was not our intention.

“We are obviously extremely disappointed with this outcome and will be seeking financial retribution from those responsible for the public defamation.”

Objectors launched a concerted campaign to block the retreat’s planning application, claiming it was a disguised alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre.

A letter distributed to nearby properties raised concerns it could harm local house prices.

The application was to repurpose a former Nelson Rd aged-care facility in Queenscliff — Sims Lodge.

The property is currently vacant and appears to be used by squatters.

Recent photographs from inside the property show syringes and condoms strewn on the floor.

A planning report for the Bellarine Wellness Retreat describes it as a 24-hour staffed “away from home retreat and respite” centre for individuals and couples — including yoga, swimming, snorkelling and day trips.

Rumours of a possible drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre appeared to stem from Mr Forbes’ application, as he is also the director of Habitat Therapeutics, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation company.
