Lions roar to 101-goal win over North Shore

- SOPHIE GRIFFITHS

IT doesn’t get much better than a 101-goal win in a game of netball, but Leopold coach Kirsty Heazlewood says her squad is still focused on improvement despite the big win.

“The girls came out firing … defensively we shut them down but by no means was it a perfect game,” she said.

“Despite the big score line difference, the game was played in good spirits which was great.”

North Shore coach Renee Scott paid full credit to the Lions, saying wet conditions were no excuse for the Seagulls massive loss.

“It was wet and slippery but all credit to Leopold for the performance they put out.

“Our expectation going in was about getting out there and building some match fitness. It may not seem like it given the score line but we do have a lot of positives to work on at training,” she said.

Crucial to Leopold’s dominant performance was the ability to capitalise from turnovers, and defensive player Genevieve O’ Connor played a key role in the Lions victory.

“She was intercepts galore yesterday, which certainly helped us grow our lead,” Heazlewood said.

“Zanna Woods also showed a lot of heart on court and was a crucial player for us”.

The Floyd sisters were a highlight amid North Shore’s disappointing day on the court. A strong performance from Murphy in her first Agrade game indicated the Seagulls have a bright future providing they continue nurture their young players.

“Murphy demonstrated a lot of leadership qualities during game, both in how she played but especially her attitude on the court,” Scott said.
