Giant steps to come, says Toby

DESPITE his side’s stuttering start to the season, star forward Toby Greene says the Greater Western Sydney is ready to click for a tough run of fixtures.

Third-placed Giants take on winless Brisbane Lions at Spotless Stadium tomorrow before match-ups against Geelong away, West Coast at home, a resurgent North Melbourne away, then Essendon and Adelaide.

“You will see over the next few weeks and months that we stand up when it matters,” Greene said.

“We’ll see where we’re at in a few weeks’ time.” The Giants’ early draw looked quite benign. Despite the draw against St Kilda, Greene said their three wins from the opening five games have been solid.

“The Collingwood game is a better win than people might have thought,” he said.

“Fremantle is another good team that we’ve beaten and are probably more highly rated now than the start of the season. We’ve got four or five big weeks coming up and we want to win most of those games, if not all of them, and then our season will be going really well.”

Greene missed much of the pre-season with a broken toe and then Rounds 2 and 3 with hamstring tightness.

He was well held by Jarryn Geary in last Saturday’s draw with struggling St Kilda but says he is building towards his form of the past two years, when he won All-Australian honours and shared the Giants’ goalkicking award.

“Hopefully I can build my season now and string some games together,” he said.

“My work rate wasn’t what I would have liked and I’ll look to respond this week. The more games I play, the fitter I’ll get.”
