Disabled in a league of their own
A GROUNDBREAKING new competition catering for all-abilities players in the Geelong region is set to kickoff in coming months.
The new competition will initially be a seniors league for people aged 14 years and over with any form of disability, with games expected to be played on Saturday mornings when it begins in June or July.
It comes following discussions between Football Federation Victoria and representatives from Gen U (formerly Karingal) and Leisure Networks, which resulted in the proposal for a new eight-team Geelong Region All-Abilities Football League.
Barwon, Bell Park, Corio Bay, Drysdale, Geelong Rangers, Lara United, Surf Coast and Surfside Waves have all expressed intent to field teams in the fledgling competition, which will involve a seven-a-side format played outdoors.
A registration day will be held at Steampacket Gardens tomorrow morning, between 10.30am to 12.30pm, with those interested also welcome to take part in fun informal small-sided games.
