Stern test for the Warriors

NPL

- WILL HOGAN

THE defensive unit of the North Geelong Warriors will again be tested when they face a potent Melbourne City today.

City sits third on the NPL2 East ladder, with the Warriors in the same spot on the NPL2 West ladder.

City has amassed an equalbest 27 goals so far this season, led by striker Moudi Najjar who has a competition-high 10 goals to his name.

Warriors coach Luciano Trani said his side looked back at its win against league powerhouse Altona Magic earlier in the season as a reminder of its defensive capabilities.

“We need to match and deliver that defensive performance because Melbourne City’s style of football will definitely ask many questions and we need to be ready to be challenged,” Trani said.

Trani is realistic about the Warriors’ prospects this season, admitting the time will players available ... then we stand a chance,” he said.

“We need a bit more time with the younger players for them to step up.”

An important cog in the Warriors side this season has been midfielder Damien Peters.

The bite-sized defensive midfielder was recruited from Werribee City during the offseason along with Domenic Marafioti and Julian Cassano, and has made an immediate impact on and off the field.

In a period when Trani is trying to evolve a new style of Warriors football, Peters plays the pivotal on-field role of controlling the offensive movement.

“He’s (Peters) that link between our back players and our front three,” Trani said.

“He’s got that ability to understand the game and read the game well. When he sees the moment, he can be a step ahead of the ball.

“He’s a player that’s had a lot more experience at this level and he knows what to expect so he can add value to the younger players in the team.

“He gives us so much confidence to others around him.”

The catalyst in Peters’ decision to leave Werribee, according to Trani, was the promise of enjoyment in his football, something Trani wants all his players to feel, even in the professional environment he’s created.

“It was a case of this is what we’re building, do you want to come and join us?” Trani said.
