SISTER’S BRAVE SURGERY
A YOUNG Geelong mother whose cancer battle made national headlines has revealed her younger sister is set to have preventative surgery.
Laura Schram was 20 weeks’ pregnant when she was diagnosed with a rare cancer and told the necessary surgery would likely involve a future without the new baby.
Ms Schram’s heartbreaking story, including the choice to continue with the pregnancy to give her unborn child the best chance of survival, made national headlines after first appearing in the Geelong
Advertiser last year. However, Ms Schram followed through with the birth, successfully welcoming an infant son — Alfie Phillip — into the world in March 2017.
Over the weekend, Ms Schram took to social media to write that her sister Taylah would undergo surgery today.
“My beautiful, courageous baby sister takes a huge leap as she joins The Seahorse Club and has her stomach removed as a preventative measure,” the Leopold mother wrote.
“(This will) ensure she never has to hear the words that have been so tragically ripping our families hearts out.
“She is making a lifechanging decision and I couldn’t be prouder of
her. So please wish her luck as she lives her last day in fear of gastric cancer.
“You’re super brave Taylah, it’s such a huge decision but you’re doing exactly what you should do. Don’t let the worry worry you anymore.”
