ROO BEAUTIES

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE BFL

ANGLESEA coach Paul Carson says his side is “a long stretch” from its best form, but has a golden opportunity to set up its season against Ocean Grove on Saturday.

The Grubbers sit second at 4-1 with the Roos in third at 3-2 with a healthy percentage following Sunday’s comfortable 65-point win over Portarlington.

Dale Carson booted six goals and Jordan Erskine four in the rout, with coach Carson saying the pair looked to be getting better every time they play.

“The big boys look dangerous, mate. They’ve kicked six and four respectively and probably had 20 shots on goal,” he said.

“They looked dangerous a lot of the time and with the more game time they play together, they’re getting better and better, which is really pleasing.”

But Carson said his side was yet to hit its straps.

“We’re really unsure what our best looks like just yet, and I don’t think we’ve seen it by a long stretch,” he said.

“We’ve seen glimpses of it, I think we get close, but that’s the scariest thing.

“I just can’t wait until it clicks, and if it happens for two quarters or three quarters I think it’s going to be a scary sight. At the minute, we’re just trying to get some consistency in the jelling of the players.”

Carson got the opportunity to watch a half of Ocean Grove’s win over Torquay on Saturday and said the Grubbers were much improved on last season.

“I went and had a look at them against Torquay, watched the first half and they look very good,” he said.

“They look like a really allrounded team.

“They’ve got some really good players on every line and they’re really tall by the looks, but nonetheless, it’s just another challenge we encourage and want to tick another box and hopefully get the win down at home.

“We know we’re going to have to be somewhere near our best to mix it with those guys, but it’s a challenge we look forward to so it’ll be good to see how we respond.”

With both Ryan Williams and Josh Hill in the mix to return after being rested on Sunday, Carson said his side could set its season up with a win on Saturday.

“Looking at the ladder, it might give us a bit of a buffer,” he said. “Over the next two weeks before the break, a lot of teams in that top six have got to play each other again. This competition is really, really tight, we know that and we’ve just got to keep winning as many as possible.”
