Crameri ‘a chance’ for Giants call-up

-

STEWART Crameri is edging closer to his first match for Geelong, believing he is “a chance” to be summonsed for Friday night’s clash against Greater Western Sydney.

The former Essendon and Western Bulldogs forward is confident he could provide coach Chris Scott with an instant impact as the Cats seek a swift bounce back after the capitulation against Sydney.

Crameri kicked 1.3 from 22 possessions in the Cats’ VFL win against Casey on Saturday night, playing mostly as a mobile high half-forward.

Having endured a slow preseason after two years effectively ruined by injury and suspension, Crameri has now played a month at VFL level without a hiccup.

“I’m a chance, but we’ll wait and see. Wednesday I might find out,” he told K rock.

“The hip’s OK and my body’s really good, and I’ve had a good couple of (weeks) in the VFL, so if I was to be called up I’m sure I’d have an impact.

“I think that’s what ‘Scotty’ (Cats coach Chris Scott) wants and we’ll go from there.”

Under changes to the AFL rookie system, Crameri is eligible to be selected anytime and no longer requires a player being added to the long-term injury list for a spot to open up.

With Daniel Menzel miss- ing last week against the Swans, Sydney exploited the Cats’ lack of marking targets and regularly negated Geelong’s forward entires by double-teaming Tom Hawkins.

Crameri last week told the Geelong Advertiser he was ready to play his first AFL game in a year.

“It’s a fine line and you’re never going to be perfectly ready but I think I’ve done a fair bit of work over the pre- season and these games to prove that I can play a full AFL game now,” Crameri said last week.

“I’ve had a couple of consistent games now where I’ve got through with no complaints with the hips.

“I’ll put my hand up every week now and hopefully I can get a game. Scotty has said I’m close and he’ll be watching out to see how I play, so we’ll wait and see this week.”
