Roos out to stop Ammos

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

GEELONG Amateur coach Rowan McSparron believes his side is yet to hit its straps as it continues to fly under the radar.

Ammos face their toughest challenge since losing to Barwon Heads five weeks ago in today’s crunch secondagainst-third contest with Anglesea.

The Roos handed the Seagulls their first loss last weekend and are proving one of the benchmark sides in the competition, with forward Jordan Erskine proving a headache.

But Ammos knocked off the Roos in Round 1 and McSparron is keen to see how his side tackles the in-form ’ Seas this time around.

“It’s always a challenge but it’s always exciting to see how the boys respond to good opposition,” McSparron said.

“You want to play footy against the better opposition and in big games, because at the end of the day that’s what you hang your hat on.

“We’re excited about it and no doubt Anglesea are as well; they’ve been in really good form and it should be a good contest.”

But McSparron said his side was still developing chemistry as it approached the halfway point of the season.

“I think it’s still building and being able to get the boys to play the way we want them to play and the way we know they can play — we’ve see glimpses of it — but we just haven’t been able to put it all together just yet,” he said.

Former Grovedale on-baller Brad Surkitt has been a notable performer in his side’s four-game winning streak, while Matthew Walsh and Kane Smith have been among the forwards covering Mitch Day’s omission with a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Joshua Westwood — who is believed to be the only 2008 premiership player still playing senior footy — will play his 150th game for Ammos today.
