Camp lets youngsters branch out

-

ADVENTUROUS children are being encouraged to get dirty and use their imagination to make their own fun in the great outdoors and at Anglesea YMCA.

Surf Coast Outdoor Adventure Kids (SOAK) gives children a chance to be masters of their own domains, from building cubbies, mountain bike riding and bush cooking to low ropes and canoeing under the watchful eye of facilitators.

YMCA Anglesea began the program last year to encourage creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

Programmer Sandy Carroll said there was no better place than outside.

“It’s a little bit different in that we send the kids outdoors and they get to choose the activities they do for the day and we give them a list of activities to choose from,” she said.

“I think it gives them the chance to use their imagination and just be a kid and do things they are maybe not able to do at home. There’s so many things they can do in nature.”

Ms Carroll said it would be great to see so many who enjoyed the 2017 camp returning next week and hoped to welcome more children to the program.

The SOAK camps run on July 10-12 for children aged 6-12, who can attend one, two or all three days between 9am-3.30pm.

Children must have their own lunch, but snacks are provided. Cost is $70 with an additional booking fee.

Book via Eventbrite, call (03) 5263 1512 or email kidsgobush@ymca.org.au to sign up.
