Skipper excited for AFLW prospects of teammates
GEELONG VFLW captain Bec Goring says a number of her teammates should consider themselves AFLW hopefuls after producing a campaign to remember.
Yesterday’s grand final soured what was a successful season for Goring and her teammates.
With Geelong entering the AFLW next year, Goring said the club was well placed to have an impact.
“This grand final has been a good opportunity to get a taste of what the big stage is like for a couple of the girls and, hopefully, it’s provided a good opportunity for some of the other squad members to be picked up in the draft and get signed to Geelong,” she said.
“There’s a lot of girls in our squad playing really good footy, so they deserve a shot at AFLW, too, I reckon.”
Former basketballer Maddy McMahon headlines that list from a mature-aged recruit perspective and could find a home at the Cats via a crosscode opportunity.
Former Carlton midfielder Madeline Keryk also produced a season to remember and must come under consideration for the Cats.
Goring said the depth at Geelong was one of the reasons why the Cats had developed so quickly.
“It’s straight after the game so we are still pretty upset, pretty disappointed, but we’re so proud of how far we’ve come this year,” she said.
“You can put it down to the culture. We’ve lived the values on and off the field, so I’m really, really proud of the group and the non-selected group.
“As it said on the banner today, 58 girls got us to the grand final, so we’re brewing something pretty awesome down in Geelong.”
While pointing to missed opportunities in front of goal, Goring said the Cats gave their all in yesterday’s loss.
“We didn’t back down, not for one second I don’t think,” she said.
“We just wanted to play our way the whole day and I think the girls did that. I’m going to welcome this holiday between VFLW and AFLW, but it’s so close after the match, I’m still a bit numb at the moment.”
