Tenace helps Saints to flag
KANE Tenace could have pulled the pin.
He could have played in the senior grand final, too.
But it speaks volumes of the veteran midfielder’s character that he stuck fast with St Mary’s, helping its reserves to a premiership.
“He deserves everything he gets, that guy,” Saints coach Russell McMahon said of Tenace post-match.
“Halfway through he might have said, ‘That’s enough, I’m not going to make the seniors’.
“I just had a little word to him and said, ‘These kids love you’. He went away, thought about it and said, ‘It’s all good’.
“He’s sensational. He truly deserved that medal.”
Tenace, who played 54 games for Geelong, was best afield in St Mary’s thrashing of Colac.
The Saints disposed of Colac with ease, running out 80-point winners at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
The minor premier put Colac to the sword in the first term and were never headed.
“Five goals to nothing at quarter time, you’d take that any day of the week,” McMahon said.
“Credit to these guys, they were just so good all year.
“We copped a loss to Leopold in Round 5 and the way these guys have bound together has been fantastic.”
Jordan Duncan, who narrowly missed senior selection after overcoming a hamstring strain in Round 18, was impressive.
Duncan booted four goals in his first match in the reserves after playing 15 games in the seniors.
Darby Hider and Nick Connors managed two goals for the Saints in a demolition.
Ruckman Matt Garner, midfielder George Steven and youngster Aaron Walters tried hard for Colac.
