Time for cats to show me the love

-

I HAVE a confession to make. I don’t find cat videos funny, I don’t like cats, and I am definitely not a cat person.

It all began when I slept over at my friend’s house a year ago.

Her family has five cats and I had the displeasure of experiencing life surrounded by the feisty felines.

Prior to this, I only had brief encounters.

I can say now with certainty that I am displeased with the idea of cats as pets.

Every time I accidentally let a cat out the front door, I was scared it would get run over, lost or find a better home with owners who had Foxtel and didn’t feed it home-brand food.

The abandonment and anxiety issues I developed from living with cats astounds me, as I knew I would get the blame if one of them got hurt.

But don’t get me started on when the cats are actually at home.

Why is it they appear constantly miserable and tired?

They literally sleep all day, they don’t go for walks, and they don’t pay attention to their owners, so how could they be so fatigued? I attempted to rub a cat and it sneered at me and then moved to a couch further away. That’s fine. I don’t want your smelly cat hair all over my black leggings anyway. And my friend constantly has scratches on her arms. Cuts I think could be from gardening or small-scale car accidents are actually from her cat trying to escape her affection. Then there’s the whole plotting to destroy and take over humankind thing. Who wants to constantly surround themselves with such negative energy? I personally prefer my dog, a companion that will chase you

as soon as you get home and miss you when you leave.

Dogs will lick you, stalk the mailman and be overly affectionate; they deserve actual time and loyalty from their owners.

Consider movies like Red Dog, Marley and Me, Snow Dogs, even the annoying yet charming Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

The list of exceptional, award-winning dog movies is endless. Cats just have Garfield.

I am not going to generalise and say all cats are the same. Garfield seems okay — but just okay. Give me an example of a real-life cat that has a kind heart and I might be swayed.

Thousands of cat videos shared per day will not change my opinion: I need a cat to show me some real love.
