Scene set for blockbuster

- GRAEME WRIGHT PREMIER BOWLS

AN impressive away win by Sebastopol over Queenscliff in Premier bowls on Saturday has set up an early blockbuster when the Ballarat outfit hosts Ocean Grove next weekend.

Along with Bareena, Ocean Grove and Sebastopol are the only unbeaten teams after three rounds.

Reigning premier Queenscliff fell to Sebastopol by just four shots in a classic match on Saturday.

Steve Sullivan was able to hold out Rob Baker by just one shot, but Sebastopol’s Scott Roberts turned around last week’s loss to a 13-shot win to help the visitors to the upset win.

Ocean Grove had a close tussle with Eastern Park, scraping home by seven shots.

Eastern Park has had a tough opening to the season. It was well beaten by Sebastopol in the first round, but bounced back to defeat Queenscliff in Round 2 before Saturday’s loss.

It meets Webbcona (5th) next week before getting some respite against lowly Buninyong, but then front top side Bareena, which beat Highton by 14 shots at the weekend.

Bareena spokesman Brannon Shelton said most games this season could go either way. Over the first three weeks we have seen nine of the 15 games decided by less than 20 shots. Shelton said the win over Highton was great but the closeness of the games with two rinks only getting up by a single shot and by only 14 shots overall was not according to plan.

The unexpected result of the weekend was in Ballarat where newcomers Buninyong was able to defeat Lara by 11 shots, giving them some confidence in their first season back in Premier.

The biggest result of the weekend saw Webbcona sweep all rinks against Victoria to win 116 to 71.
