Highton wins thriller as leaders flex muscles

- GRAEME WRIGHT DIVISION ONE

WHILE Highton dodged a bullet with a one-shot win over Torquay in Division One pennant on Saturday, all other games produced lopsided results.

In the three rounds to date there have been eight games with a margin of 24 shots or more, with four of those played on Saturday.

The unbeaten pair of City of Geelong (46 shots) and Drysdale (45 shots) had little trouble against Leopold and Geelong Cement respectively.

Ocean Grove gave up two rinks to St Leonards but Alan Callow’s 25-shot win over Tony Long ensured a comfortable 24-shot margin. In the final match, Belmont took down Bell Post Hill by 25 shots.

Ocean Grove had worked hard on recruiting in the offseason, but until Saturday it had not had an impact.

Callow said they got a big wake-up losing to the relegated City Of Geelong last week but things came together on the tricky St Leonards greens.

Giving up 16 shots in four ends to master bowler Craig Elliott the previous week had brought a stronger focus on not giving up numbers on any end this week.

City of Geelong is showing that coming back to Division One has its benefits on game day. The experienced Premier players are blending well with the new players and those who hadn’t yet made it to the top side, making them tough to beat all season.
