Too wet for GCA1
WITH the widespread rain across the region on Friday night, the South BarwonGrovedale game was the only match to get a start in GCA1 on Saturday.
With GCA regulations stipulating that the beginning of weather-affected matches is determined on a game-bygame basis, the Swans and Tigers were free to start, despite the remaining four games being reduced to one-day fixtures next Saturday.
The impact of Friday night’s rain on bowlers’ run-ups was the primary cause of cancellation of other games. GROVEDALE coach Barry Tsitas has lavished praise on second-game player Lachlan Hornibrook after the 16-yearold made the most of his maiden first X1 innings to grind out a crucial 90-minute, team-high 30 batting at number 10.
“He did a lot of things that the top order didn’t do,” Tsitas said in reflecting on the teenager’s invaluable knock.
“He didn’t come out and play any shots that he doesn’t have in his book, he just played within himself and just waited for them to bowl to his strengths.”
Hornibrook strode to the crease with the Tigers perilously placed at 8-60 and worked, firstly with Tsitas and then Dylan Taylor, to see Grovedale to a more respectable 111.
“I’m sure that South Barwon didn’t see that coming because being just his second game they wouldn’t have known much about him,” Tsitas said. “I was so proud of him, he was able to basically do everything that our top order didn’t do.
“He didn’t seem fazed, wasn’t nervous, and that little partnership between he and Dyl (Taylor), it was great to see from two of our younger guys.
“Time will tell how important that partnership was because we still believe we can win from here, if we can get a couple of wickets in the early overs of next week.”
