Christmas cheer for church charity lunch

Geelong Advertiser - - NEWS -

ATTENDEES at Geelong Christ Church’s Christmas Day lunch will socialise in a more comfortable space and receive food vouchers thanks to new sponsors of the annual tradition.

The much-loved charity event was on its knees just three years ago, but was rescued by new leaders and continues to grow in its offering.

While organisers had been looking at shifting to another venue due to ongoing heat issues with Christ Church’s McKillop St hall, a generous donor has promised to resolve the problem.

A high-profile Geelong resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, has made a $25,000 donation that will pay for an air conditioner to be installed in the hall. Event organiser Dr Bernard Shiu was thrilled with the gesture.

“The temperature has been as high as 42 degrees in the hall. It can get suffocating,” Dr Shiu said.

The addition of another sponsor, local KFC owner Scott Hosking, will also enable the church to send its guests home with meal and drink vouchers.

Organisers are searching for 30 volunteers to help run the lunch. Dr Shiu called for interested people to email geelongxmaslunch@ gmail.com
