PROMINENT Australian swimming coach Scott Volkers has been committed to stand trial over a string of historical child sex offences.

Volkers appeared in Brisbane Magistrates’ Court yesterday which ordered the case go to a higher court. He did not enter a plea.

The former top swimming coach is accused of indecently dealing with two girls under the age of 16 in the 1980s.

The five offences allegedly occurred in the northern Brisbane suburbs of Aspley and Bald Hills between 1984 and 1988. One of the alleged victims, who gave permission to be identified, said outside court she had waited many years for this day.

“It’s an exciting day. It’s a hard day. But we’re really, really looking forward to our chance to have our say,” she said.

Volkers was originally charged in 2002 but the charges were later dropped. Queensland’s child abuse and sexual crime group decided to re-prosecute the case following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse in 2014.
