Boost for Rockets
BARWON Rockets coach Brad Hauenstein says he is confident the under-21 squad assembled for this year’s Victorian Country Cricket League can achieve success.
The Rockets will be boosted by the inclusion of key batsman Layton McCann from North Geelong, as well as South Barwon dynamo Jordan Rossi. Hauenstein said he could see no reason why the Rockets would not progress if they played to their potential.
“We have got some pretty handy batters and are lucky enough to have Layton McCann from North Geelong playing for us, and he was a Vic Country player last year,” Hauenstein said.
“We also have Jordan Rossi, who has been making some runs at this level in the last couple of years, and a couple of young quick bowlers that I’m looking forward to seeing in action.
“The last few years we have been pretty lucky and haven’t really lost a game, although it depends on who you are playing.
“We have picked a pretty good squad, so it will be disappointing if we don’t perform.”
The Rockets open their campaign tomorrow when they take on Gippsland Pride at Merv Hughes Oval.
Hauenstein said that while he was somewhat in the dark as to the makeup of the opposition, he would instruct his players to play to their strengths.
“I don’t really know too much about them, but over the years they have been a fairly strong region down that way,” Hauenstein said.
“We have a fairly young squad but we have got a couple of experienced boys who have been in the system for a few years.
“We will just play consistent areas early and try to build our way into the game. We know all of these boys can play, so if they accept that it is just a game of cricket and they are in the team because they are good players, their form will hold up if they back themselves.”
