Vixens talk elite sport with star students
MELBOURNE Vixens Emily Mannix and Tegan Philip shared some key experiences with Geelong students as part of a Victorian Institute of Sport information session.
Forty-five students from years 8 to 10, across eight different schools including Geelong High, Northern Bay and Belmont High, were invited to the special clinic.
The program, in conjunction with Deakin University and the Barwon Sports Academy, saw the Melbourne Vixen duo share some of their invaluable experience with the teenagers.
“Emily and Tegan spoke as teenage speakers, if you like, about their experience as elite athletes coming from regional areas and the challenges, but also the opportunities,” the academy’s chief executive, Cam Loftus, said.
“Also the need to be resilient and to take ownership of your own diet and training.
“The Vixens, particularly, they really commit to each other and if there’s something prescribed, they do it to the letter and make each other accountable.”
The students also heard from a Corio Bay Health Group physio, a VIS strength and conditioning coach, a VIS dietitian and a VIS sports scientist about physical preparation. Twelve exercise and sports science students from Deakin also shadowed the VIS experts to gain valuable lessons for their study.
