Rain sets up afternoon date to complete GK-Perth match

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE BASEBALL

GEELONG-KOREA and Perth will resume play at 3pm today after rain forced an early end to last night’s second game of the series at the Geelong Baseball Centre.

The Koreans recorded their first Australian Baseball League win on Thursday night with a 7-1 victory over the visitors in a you determine a winner and a loser,” Australian Baseball League chief operating officer Ben Foster said.

“We’ll pick this up exactly where we were, run all the runners on base exactly where they left the field and we’ll play this to the completion of nine innings.”

GK was trailing 5-0 when rain stopped play in the third inning.

Meanwhile, Foster said Thursday night’s debut match at the Geelong Baseball Centre was an overwhelming success on and off the field at Waurn Ponds, with GK scoring a big win — its first victory after losing four from four on the road in Sydney last weekend.

“It was a big shock to them (against) Sydney last week, especially the guys who had never played internationally before,” he said.

“They’re at the point now where, ‘OK, we know what the standard the ABL is, we know what to expect and we know where to go’.”

Foster said the ABL had no concerns with GK losing the way it did over the opening weekend, with all four visiting teams struggling away from home.

“It was literally the first time they got together, so it was always going to be tough and Sydney, to their credit, they are a heck of a ball club,” he said.

“And they (GeelongKorea) weren’t the only ones. We had 16 games last week and the home team won 15 of the 16.

“We saw (Thursday), they’ll win their fair share of games and they belong in the league, no doubt.”

Foster said anyone who bought a ticket to last night’s wash-out could return with their ticket at 3pm today. That game will then be followed by the third match of the series at 7pm, before a 1pm game tomorrow afternoon.
