Bashing video accused ‘a goose’

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

A BELMONT man who allegedly filmed a friend assaulting a homeless man in the CBD last year has been given three months to clean up his act.

The Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard police allege that Adrian Galloway, 22, also assaulted the man, in addition to recording the Moorabool St attack and posting it to social media platform Snapchat for friends to see.

The video shows a friend of Mr Galloway kicking the 47year-old homeless man as he lay on the ground about 4am on October 11.

In another video posted online last year, Mr Galloway said he was provoked before the alleged attack.

“We’re not in the wrong here. We were defending ourselves. We tried letting it go,” Mr Galloway said.

“We wouldn’t normally do that. But he pushed us.”

Reasons for the altercation were not aired in court yesterday.

The court was told Mr Galloway pushed the man with enough force to knock him off his feet.

Mr Galloway faced the Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday on unlawful assault, offensive behaviour and property damages charges but did not enter pleas.

The court heard Mr Galloway was also spotted urinating in the fountain at Eastern Beach and vandalising a nearby wooden rotunda on August 23 last year.

Asked about his actions on August 23 by police Mr Galloway said: “(I was) being silly. Being a goose in front of a mate.”

Yesterday Mr Galloway was ordered to pay $500 for the damage he caused.

Defence lawyer Simon O’Halloran said his client was seeking help from Barwon Child Youth and Family for drug, alcohol and anger management problems.

“Not much can be said about his behaviour; it’s pretty ordinary,” Mr O’Halloran said.

The court heard Mr Galloway was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2014 and was undergoing treatment for the condition.

Magistrate Peter Mellas said Mr Galloway needed to consider his actions while drinking.

“You need to think this stuff through,” Mr Mellas said.

“The worry here is that each of these things happened while you were drinking.”

He deferred his sentence until April 18 when Mr Galloway will be expected to front court.
