Farr has presidential ambition

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

SPRINTCAR veteran Robbie Farr will be out to claim backto-back President’s Cups at Avalon tonight ahead of the sport’s biggest week.

The 45-year-old Queenslander claimed last year’s race in a thriller and is down again for a hit and run job before heading to Mt Gambier on Thursday before the Classic weekend at Warrnambool.

“That’s the plan; I think that’s everyone’s plan,” Farr said with a smile.

“It’s Classic weekend, so the biggest race in the country is the Classic at Warrnambool and it (the President’s Cup) is always a lead-up race to that.

“We do Avalon, we do Warrnambool and we do Mt Gambier, so it’s probably the biggest weekend in Australian speedway. It’s an awesome little facility there at Avalon and always puts on a good race.”

Farr, who estimated he had competed in 25 President’s Cups, expected yet another hot field, with a handful of Americans making the journey to Victoria each year.

“I only come to Victoria this time of the year, it’s basically the only time I come to Victoria,” he said.

“It’s always intriguing for us to come and race against the Victorians, a lot of tough competition, so we don’t expect to win. For some reason, that track has always been good to me over the years.

“I’d imagine there’d be six or eight Americans there and probably 50 or 60 cars entered with Australia’s best as well.”

Farr has been doing all of his lead-up racing in Sydney this summer, but was looking forward to Avalon putting on another good show.

“It’s probably no different to any other year. We’ve had some good nights and bad nights, so it’s just a matter of this week putting it all together,” he said.

“The way the facility packs them in there, it’s quite tight and there’s a good atmosphere.

“It’s their biggest race of the year. A lot of travellers come down — a lot of the fans travel from all over Australia for the first leg of this weekend, so there’s a lot of hype around, which is good.”
