Edwards’ horses in top form

- RYAN REYNOLDS

FRESHWATER Creek trainer Jamie Edwards admits keeping his hot run going is getting harder as his horses race through their grades.

Edwards has saddled up 14 winners from his past 50 starters, becoming arguably Australia’s most in-form trainer.

It has also seen him surge up the Victorian and Victorian Country trainers premiership, where he sits 14th.

But Edwards is now starting to run out of options for some of his gallopers, who have won their way out of less competitive grades.

“I’m winning a lot of lowly graded races and those horses, like Fill The Flute, have zipped through their grades and are now carrying top weight in Melbourne on a Saturday,” Edwards said.

“The horses have gone through their grades well, it’s just whether they are good enough to take that next step.

“The horses are going well, it’s good, really good for the stable. Everyone is doing a ripping job.”

Edwards said the addition of his son James as assistant trainer and the redevelopment of the track at his Freshwater Creek property were two key factors behind his impressive run of form.

Geelong’s leading trainer will be hoping his good form can continue today, saddling up in-form stayer Prince Ziggy at Sandown in the $50,000 Mypunter.com Handicap (2100m).

The five-year-old ran an eye-catching second behind highly-regarded import Schabau at Flemington with the duo finishing well clear of the rest of the field.

Rising apprentice Chelsea McFarlane will ride Prince Ziggy from barrier 13.
