The Slippery Mackerel, Armstrong Creek.

-

Flake, minimum chips and two potato cakes: $13.40 IT WAS a landslide victory for The Slippery Mackerel, easily taking the crown of Geelong’s Favourite Fish and Chips, according to our readers.

The little store opened in the Warralily Village shopping Centre in November 2017, and wasted no time building a dedicated following.

“Hit the beach then hit this place up for fish and chips on the way back to G-Town,” Ben Jelly said online when giving The Slippery Mackerel his vote. “The homemade curry sauce is awesome!”

Owners Deborah Brandwood and Mark Mannion have made the most of being ng the first fish and chip shop to open in the rapidlyyexpanding Armstrong g Creek area.

“I think we’ve been well received because people (including us) waited a long time to have any kind of takeaway options in the area,” Ms Brandwood said.

“Our food tastes great, we have options for everybody, we use quality ingredients and haven’t tried to ‘reinvent the wheel.’ Having Mark and

his mum be in the fish and chip game for over 90 years collectively helps too.”

There’s no secret to producing great fish and chips, Ms Brandwood said. “It takes quality batter, regularly filtering and changing oil, quality ingredients and stock and most importantly great customer service,” she said.

The Addy’s opinion: We wholeheartedly w agree with the readers on this one. While it was the most expensive ex of the four, and the oiliest, The Th Slippery Mackerel was the standout. An incredibly generous mountain of crisp, golden chips, topped by perfectly-fried crunchy potato cakes (with two free extras thrown in for good measure), and easily the most generous portion of perfectly battered and fried flake, made this the Addy’s favourite of the four. As for the curry sauce; the Addy testers are split, so judge it for yourself.
