With a bang, man seen on roof

- OLIVIA SHYING

A MAN shocked an elderly couple when he allegedly hid on the roof of their Highton house while trying to evade police Thursday night.

The couple were in their Finningley Court home when they heard banging, but thought it was a knock at the door.

The woman said she was shocked to look through the perspex roof of her pergola and see the man clambering around about 6.30pm.

“It’s not what you’d expect to see. We were just watching the news and he’s appeared up there,” she said.

“It really shook me up. You don’t realise how much something like that can affect you.”

It is understood the man had been chased from the Kardinia Health complex on Colac Rd, where it is alleged he had caused damage to a public building.

After running past a school and through a retirement village, he went through two private properties and was chased by the owners before hiding on the couple’s roof.

With the help of their neighbours, the couple kept the man on their roof until police arrived.

A police spokeswoman said officers went to the property after reports of suspicious activity about 6.30pm.

“Police arrested a man who was behaving erratically after climbing on to the roof of a property on Finningley Court in Highton about 6.30pm,” the spokeswoman said.

The 36-year-old was taken to Geelong hospital under police guard.

He was expected to be charged with criminal damage and drug offences.
