suburb of Bundoora following a night out with friends.

Detectives said she suffered a “horrific” assault.

“She is all the time smiling. She loved people. She had very big opinions, her mind open for everything,” Mr Maasarwe said. “She liked to study different cultures, different nationalities.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the death as the “most despicable of crimes”.

“Every woman in Australia, every person in Australia, should be able to travel home in safety,” he said.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews also expressed his sadness. “She should have been safe here. And I am heart- broken she wasn’t,” Mr Andrews tweeted.

The first in a number of planned vigils for Ms Maasarwe was held yesterday at La Trobe University, where she attended college.

Mr Maasarwe waited until the crowds had left to inspect the tribute to his daughter — a framed photograph sur- rounded by candles and flowers.

“I feel very sad from one side but from another side when I hear this support and this help from the people, from the community, from the police, this makes the suffer feel at least a little more better,” he said. NEW NE MP Stuart Grimley has dodged questions about a controversial con tweet from his party par leader Derryn Hinch, which whi speculated about Aiia Maasarwe’s Maa murder in Bundoora. door

Senator Se Hinch took to Twitter o on Thursday claiming the culprit culpr behind Ms Maasarwe’s murder murd earlier this week had tried to burn her genitalia to hide evidence. Police have not released any information to support his claim. The tweet has attracted widespread criticism on social media.

Mr Grimley, a recently elected Western Victoria MP, briefly touched on the issue yesterday through a post on his personal Twitter page.

“A lot has been said about (Senator Hinch’s) tweet. Disrespectful or not, the point remains that somewhere in our community is a person who has killed and may strike again,” the former Armstrong Creek policeman wrote. “Share your outrage against a murderer rather than a tweet. Let’s work together to catch this bastard.”

In an interview with the Geelong Advertiser, Mr Grimley refused to say whether he condoned the original tweet.
