Death crash intersection made a priority for safety upgrade
A DANGEROUS Mannerim intersection where two people died in a fiery crash has been flagged for urgent review.
City Hall has revealed the intersection of Anderson Rd, a council road, and QueenscliffPortarlington Rd, an arterial road, will be prioritised as part of a VicRoads review.
City of Greater Geelong acting director of city services Heath Chasemore said council had submitted a proposal for intersection improvement works to VicRoads.
The State Government has invested $600,000 for planning and investigation of a safety upgrade to QueenscliffPortarlington Rd.
Anderson Rd resident Madison Jennings is sure she heard a car speed past her house seconds before two cars collided and burst into flames just off Queenscliff-Portarlington Rd.
The crash, about 10.30pm on Tuesday, involved so much force the two cars were cata- pulted into a farmer’s paddock.
The cars were found by a bus driver and police say the victims have still not been formally identified.
Ms Jennings says authorities must urgently upgrade the road to prevent further tragedy on the 60km/h road.
“People do at least 100km/h on the road all the time. They go that fast,” she said.
“It’s just really concerning. We have three young children and they know not to go out there.”
Ms Jennings said many drivers seemed to think they could get away with speeding.
“They just zap down there. People think it’s a rural road, that no one is around and they just don’t care,” she said.
“We would love to see the road sealed and more lighting at the intersection.
“We would also love the police to enforce the speed.”
