WORK AND FAMILY LIFE FORCE TORQUAY PRESIDENT TO QUIT ROLE

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE LOCAL CRICKET

TORQUAY Cricket Club president Steve Young has stepped down for work and family reasons as the GCA2 club awaits its fate for allegedly breaching the player points cap.

The Geelong Cricket Association board met on Wednesday night to determine a suitable sanction for exceeding the points limit in up to five matches before Christmas.

The Tigers were last night awaiting an update from the GCA regarding a potential penalty the club faces and the games they breached the cap.

It is understood affected games that Torquay won could be reverted to draws, potentially costing the Tigers 15 premiership points.

The Tigers are third on the ladder with 45 points going into today’s grand final rematch against Bell Park, having won six straight games between Rounds 2-7. Anomalies with Torquay’s points allocations came to light after Round 6.

It comes as Young, who was in his fourth year as president, has stood down from the role, although the points saga has only played a small part in his departure.

Work and family changes over the summer have changed Young’s personal life, which made it harder for him to fulfil presidential commitments.

It is expected he will see out the season on the committee, with Torquay vice-president Rob Dunne to take over as interim president. After a series of delays, the Tigers met with the GCA last Thursday, almost 60 days after reports surfaced of potential breaches of the player points cap breaches in some matches leading up to Christmas.
