Club awaits call on tall

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

GEELONG will be sweating on the scans for ruck Aasta O’Connor after the experienced tall copped a knock to her leg in Saturday night’s loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The Cats will welcome back Rocky Cranston for Sunday’s clash against Adelaide, while captain Melissa Hickey has put in a solid training block to put her hand up to return from an ACL injury.

But Cats coach Paul Hood said scans would determine whether O’Connor, who has also previously torn her ACL, would be right for the trip to Adelaide.

“She’s had a knock to the leg. Initially it was a cork,” Hood said.

“They’ll investigate to see if there was any structural damage later in the week.”

The Cats’ inexperience was a determining factor in Saturday night’s loss, but Hood said his side would continue to learn as the season goes on, knowing Adelaide would provide yet another test for his first-year team.

“We’ll get better for the experience, it’s great to test ourselves against good teams and we look forward to coming out again next week and improving a little bit more,” Hood said.

“The Crows-Bulldogs game was pretty tight last week and we know Adelaide structure up really well, so it’s going to be a tough challenge. It’s a great opportunity for us to travel interstate together, for the group to bond a little bit more and test ourselves against another really good AFLW unit.

“Our defence stood up really, really well and we’ve just got to work on moving the ball up the field and connecting a bit better.”
